October 27, 2008 -- For the second year in a row, Virginia folk favorite Bob Zentz has posted his new holiday classic, "The End Of Another Year," as a free download from www.bobzentz.com (note: download was available through New Year's 2009).
Zentz released this 2007 recording of his 1995 composition as a free download last holiday season, and used the occasion of his 2008 Midwest Tour to announce the extension of this gift of music to another year.
"When I made this song, I was thinking about the memories and acquaintances who get us from one year to the next," says Bob. "This was a way to thank them."
The song, composed by Bob for the first -- and last! -- "First Night Norfolk" celebration as a way of welcoming 1996, has circulated through the folk world and even been performed and recorded by other artists, including the late Pat Travis of Pittsburgh, PA, but never made it onto one of Bob's studio recordings until last year.
The track was recorded in January 2007 at Soundside Studios in Ocracoke, NC. In addition to Bob on vocals and guitar, the recording features Lou Castro and Marcy Brenner of the Ocracoke-based duo "Coyote" and Jeanne McDougall of the L.A.-based band "The Westlin Weavers."
The song will be included on an upcoming studio album.
For five decades, Bob Zentz has been at the heart of the Hampton Roads traditional music scene. The Norfolk native performs internationally yet still lives and performs in his hometown, and is active in nurturing the next generation of traditional music performers, in the belief that the future of our world depends upon our youth, and music. Information about Bob's music, life, friends, performances, and programs for all ages – elementary school to elders – is available at www.bobzentz.com
