Flyers (PDF) October 7, 2012 - October 8, 2012 - Series
October 1, 2012 -- A series of special events at two landmark Hampton Roads maritime venues will shine a light on the woman who was long one of Britains unknown maritime literary treasures.
Concerts at Yorktown's Watermen's Museum and Virginia Beach's Old Coast Guard Station will feature Tidewater Troubadour Bob Zentz and Maine's Charles Ipcar in an evening of storytelling and song, "The Songs of Cicely Fox Smith.
Ipcar is
co-editor with Jim Saville of The Complete Poetry of Cicely Fox Smith, a
new edition featuring the nautical poems of British poet Cicely Fox Smith
(1882-1954) as recently republished by Little Red Tree Publishing, © 2012.
This poetry book includes over 640 poems, 90 of which have been recorded as songs by nautical singers from all over the
world in recent years.
Bob and Charlie will present a short overview of Cicely Fox Smith's life and poetry, and
perform many of her sea poems that have been adapted for singing. The poetry book will be available for sale,
as will the songbook Sea Songs of Cicely Fox Smith, and CDs featuring songs
adapted from Cicely Fox Smith poems -- including Bob's 2007 release Closehauled on the Wind of a
Dream, and several CDs recorded by Charlie, including his latest
release, Songs
from an Old Sea Chest.
