February 4, 2015 -- Tidewater Troubadour Bob Zentz draws on his extensive collection of songs, stories, and historic instruments to tell the tale of the banjo across time and continents.
Songs, Tales, and Tunes of THE BANJO, From Africa to Appomattox, will be presented twice at The Venue on 35th, first with a matinee on Sunday, February 15 at 3:00 PM, and followed by an evening performance on Friday, February 20 at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $10 with advance reservation, or $12 at the door.
"The name of this program mentions just two stops along the banjo's journey," says Bob, "but the roots and branches extend into the present day, reviving and rediscovering the banjo with each generation. It's truly a treasure, the way the banjo links people and cultures to this very day."
Instruments featured in the program include
the African folk instruments such as the bow harp, and harp lutes including the
kora and akonting; early American versions of the banjar and mountain
banjo; and modern incarnations of the banjo dating from the 19th and 20th
centuries.
