The Last Skipjack

From Hove-to, And Drifting ...

Music and lyrics © 1999 Bob Zentz

1.  Fell asleep on deck the other night (D-G-A-D)

(last skipjack on the Chesapeake Bay) (D-A-D)

When a ghostly sloop hove into sight (D-G-A-D)

(last skipjack on the Chesapeake Bay) (D-A-D)

Had her mast rigged back and her mainsail set (D-G-A-D)

(last skipjack on the Chesapeake Bay) (D-A-D)

And the name on her trailboard I won’t forget (D-G-A-D)

(said the last skipjack on the Chesapeake Bay) (D-A-D)

Chesapeake Bay, whoa, Chesapeake Bay (D-G-D)

(last skipjack on the Chesapeake Bay) (D-A-D)

Chesapeake Bay, oh, Chesapeake Bay (D-G-D)

(last skipjack on the Chesapeake Bay) (D-A-D)

2.  She was broad in the beam with a shallow draft …

Had a trim little push-boat hanging aft …

Now there’s only a dozen work the Bay today …

She’s the last working sailboat in the U.S.A. …  (chorus)

3.  As I come alongside of her to a mournful song …

Said my dredges are empty and the oysters gone …

Then I awoke as from a dream …

There was a sail on the horizon off the starboard beam …  (chorus)
