(in Bb -- capo 3)
1. Before there was language, before there was time
(G-C-G)
The waters would mingle and rise with a rhyme (C-G-D-G)
And creatures would gather, their new world to see (G-C-G)
And wonders and glories they'd read by the sea (C-G-D-G)
Read by the sea, read by the sea (G-C-G)
All nature's creatures, they read by the sea
(C-G-D-G)
2. And people have come here for thousands of years
To share in the sunrise, their hopes and their fears
And listen as nature with wind, wave and tree
Would write out a new song they'd read by the sea
Read by the sea, read by the sea
All nature's peoples, they read by the sea
3. When newcomers landed with their written word
They wove out a new tale from what they had heard
With binding and printing, prepared carefully
Their books of remembrance to read by the sea
Read by the sea, read by the sea
All nature's travelers, they read by the sea
4. Now words can be written and words can be heard
And words can be felt if you're one with the word
And words are more precious than precious things be
When you and I share them and read by the sea
Read by the sea, read by the sea
All nature's children, they read by the sea
5. Now readers are grandmas and readers are sons
And daughters and fathers and just everyone
The moms and the granddads and babes yet to be
We cuddle together and read by the sea
Read by the sea, read by the sea
All nature's families, they read by the sea
Read by the sea, read by the sea
Sit down beside me ... and read by the sea
